Caroline Calouche began her training under Pat Wall at Gaston Dance Theatre in Gastonia, North Carolina. She furthered her dance education at Texas Christian University where she graduated with two B.F.A. degrees in Ballet and Modern Dance. At TCU, Caroline had the opportunity to work with Ellen Page Shelton, Li-Chou Cheng, Elizabeth Gillaspy, Susan Douglas Roberts, Kerry Kreiman and Fernando Bujones. In 2004 she received a North Carolina Regional Artist Grant to study dance and choreography in New York City and Brussels, Belgium. From these experiences, she was accepted into the International Choreographic Exchange Program at the Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance for post-graduate work in choreography. While at SEAD, she had the opportunity to work with Susan Quinn, Joao da Silva, Andrew Harwood, Libby Farr, Keren Levi, Ori Flomin, Milan Kozanek and Tugce Tuna. After her studies and work in the U.S. and Europe, Caroline established her contemporary and aerial dance company in her hometown of Gastonia, North Carolina. In 2009, Caroline received another Regional Artist Grant from the Arts and Science Council of Charlotte-Mecklenburg to participate in aerial dance classes at the 2010 Aerial Dance Festival in Boulder, Colorado where had the pleasure of working with Nancy Smith, Elsie and Serenity Smith and Kevin O’Connor. Along with creating new works for Caroline Calouche & Co., she has choreographed for the Dance Department in the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Winthrop University, Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance, Contemporary Ballet Dallas and Florida Community College at Jacksonville, The School of North Carolina Dance Theatre. Her work has been performed in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Florida, Texas, Austria and Germany. Caroline is working on her Nimble Arts Foundation Level Teaching Certificates in Aerial Silks, Trapeze and Lyra. Kaila Dockal is a recent graduate from Winthrop University with her B.A. in Dance with a Concentration in K-12 Teacher Certification. Kaila has been dancing for the past 19 years studying the styles of ballet, tap, jazz, hip-hop, contemporary, modern and lyrical. She has also been teaching dance for the past 7 years, teaching ballet, tap, jazz and hip-hop at Fascinating Rhythm Studio in York, SC. During her college career she was given many great
opportunities to further develop her dance education, such as dancing under Maria Caruso and representing Winthrop University’s Dance Department with her choreography at the 2016 American College Dance Association’s Southeastern conference. Kaila became interested in aerial arts while participating in the summer intensive program taught by Caroline Calouche. Kaila now has the pleasure of beginning her professional dance and aerial career with Caroline Calouche and Co. and is excited for what is to come.
Javier Gonzalez (2nd Season, Main Company Dancer) began his career in dance in 2008 studying hip-hop and various Latin Style Dances. In 2009 He became a company member of Ballet Folclórico de las Americas and LeColours Latino Dance. He was the principal dancer for the modern department at CPCC Dance Theater from 2010 to 2015. He has also danced with ECHO Contemporary Dance Company and the Moving Poets of Charlotte as well as a guest dancer for Carnaval Carolina, Charlotte’s largest Latin festival. He has been a backup dancer for Latin artist including Las Fenix, Jorge Celedon and former Miss Universe Alicia Machado. On the side Javier enjoys teaching dance to Latin girls preparing them for their quinceañeras celebrations.
Alison Johnson (4th Season, Main Company Dancer) is a graduate of the University of Georgia with a dual degree in Dance (A.B) and Child and Family Development (B.S.). She also holds a Graduate Certificate in Public Health from UNCC. Alison performed and taught dance with Advocate Arts Contemporary Dance. Since relocating to Charlotte, Alison has danced with Martha Connerton, 4thright dance, has participated in the Charlotte New Music Festival and is currently the Studio Manager and a teacher at CC&Co. Alison has choreographed for the CC&Co. Youth Ensemble that premiered at the Charlotte Dance Festival’s CEDA show in March 2016. In the Fall, she will resume studies at UNCC working towards a Masters in Public Health with the goal of integrating dance and aerial arts into public health focused community outreach. She is also currently completing her Nimble Arts Teacher Training Course in Trapeze Foundation Level.
Marcia Fresquez (3rd Season, Main Company) is a graduate from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte with her BA degree in Dance. While earning her degree, she has had the opportunity to dance alongside major dance companies and artists such as David Ingram, Leah Cox, Carolina Ballet, and Parsons Dance. Marcia has had the pleasure of working with Charlotte based performance arts companies including The Wake Project and Taproot Ensemble. In 2014, she began her aerial dance training with Caroline Calouche & Co. She is thrilled to continue to her love and passion for dance and aerial with CC&Co. as a dancer, teacher, and Youth Ensemble Director.
Anthony Oliva (2nd Season, Main Company) is fascinated, overjoyed, and nourished by the communication of bodies in motion with one another. He has danced and climbed all his life, and began training himself in circus arts in 2006 after studying Theatre and Dance at the University of Alaska Anchorage. He has since studied and graduated from the New England Center For Circus Arts’ Professional Training Program (Chinese Pole, Hand to Hand, Hoop Diving), where he was then employed as an acrobatics instructor. In 2011, he began working as a dancer for Pilobolus Dance Theatre. Anthony has trained and worked as a performer, instructor, and rigger across the U.S. and internationally, from Anchorage to Miami, Montreal to Macedonia. Anthony is to be apart of Caroline Calouche & Co. and to continue to merge the worlds of Dance, Theatre, and Circus.
Sarah Small (4th Season, Apprentice) began as an aerial student with Caroline Calouche & Co. in 2011 and joined the company in 2013. She has trained with Susan Murphy, Tanya Burka, Maria Caruso and Pauline Legras. Sarah is working on her Nimble Arts Lyra Foundation Teacher Training Course.
Sarah Ritchy (2nd Season, Main Company) graduated from East Carolina University with a Multi-Disciplinary degree in dance, theatre, and choreographic studies. While growing up, Sarah trained as a Level 10 and Jr. Elite competitive gymnast. She has trained in modern, jazz, ballet, and musical theatre techniques with Teal Darkenwald, John Dixon, Tommi Galaska, and Galina Panova. She has worked with members from Koresh Dance Company, Lauren Edson, Joe Joe Grooves, and many other artists. Sarah has choreographed for numerous choreography projects and shows, as well as full-length musicals. Her love of dance and gymnastics created a passion for aerial arts. She has trained in aerial arts with Caroline Calouche & Co performing in festivals and full length shows. She can’t wait for this fantastic new season with CC&Co!
